I walked the ground where he had walked. Outside of the great stone church of the Mission the native people, Juanenos took their name from. The church is only a ruin but the mission it served is still strong today. I do not know his name. Only that he was a man of God and he walked the grounds of the Mission then as he does now. Who knows if he arrived in 1775 or in 1806. I do know that he speaks English as he spoke it to me this very morning and he spoke it well.
"Gerald" I heard him say. "Yes I'm here. Who am I speaking with?" Then a young man addressed him as "Father". "Father?" was my response, questioning who he was. He was a modest man and took things into deep consideration as he must have been doing after he called my name.
"I should go" he said. I guess I did not hear him clearly or I would have responded by asking him to stay. I said "Good morning". I guess he felt he
needed to make me understand when he said "Gerald, I am a dead man."He must have turned and walked away as I heard his voice no longer. Why did he feel he must go? It must be perplexing to him. Is this where, based upon his personal beliefs that expected to be? Talking to a man who lives well beyond his own time. Has God tasked him to stay on and keep a vigilant watch on this holy place?
Why is he here? Perhaps he was visiting at this very moment. Whatever his intent and purpose, one thing he did was make me aware how Life continues. How the soul is immortal and how connected we are to our history.
One day I hope to meet him face to face. That day we shall sit and have a long talk.
